Inspiring Independence in People with Disabilities

Empowering individuals with disabilities to make choices about their daily activities should be prioritized. AdvanceCare’s Family Model Professionals assist and support individuals while also encouraging a sense of independence and empowerment. When individuals have a say in their lives, it positively impacts their mental well-being and quality of life.

AdvanceCare’s Family Model Services offer care to seniors and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a single-family residence called a Family Model Home.  These homes are located in Tennessee and offer an alternative to assisted living facilities, nursing facilities, and group homes.  With this program, the individual moves into the Family Model Home and receives around-the-clock support in a stable environment unaffected by shift changes.  It’s a beautiful service in which the supported person becomes a part of the family.  If you’re interested in finding out more, please visit www.tnadvancecare.com.  If you want to learn how to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, keep reading!

Embracing Autonomy

Inspiring individuals who struggle with disabilities includes valuing their ability to make decisions that affect their lives. Whether choosing what to wear, what to eat, or how to spend their day, every choice matters. It’s an essential aspect of person-centered care – placing the individual at the heart of decision-making.

Tips for Encouraging Autonomy in Decision-Making

1. Engage in Open Communication:

Ask open-ended questions where individuals feel comfortable expressing their preferences and concerns. Actively listen without judgment.

2. Offer Choices:

Present options for activities, meals, or routines, allowing individuals to select what aligns with their preferences. Even small choices can promote a sense of control.

3. Provide Information:

Ensure individuals have sufficient information to make decisions about their care. Explain available options in detail.

4. Respect and Support Decisions:

If choices differ from what you might consider optimal, respect those decisions. Support individuals in their choices while ensuring their safety and well-being.

6. Recognize Independence:

Uphold their dignity, recognizing that even when support is required, they reserve their right to choose.

Benefits of Empowering Choice

Encouraging individuals to make decisions reduces feelings of helplessness and boosts self-confidence. Moreover, it strengthens the relationship between the person giving care and those receiving care.

Conclusion

Empowering individuals to choose their daily activities shows that you respect their rights and opinions. It’s a transformative approach that recognizes and celebrates the uniqueness of each individual. By encouraging decision-making, support networks can positively impact the lives of those they serve.  If you’re interested in being a Family Model Professional or receiving care from one, please visit AdvanceCare’s website at www.tnadvancecare.com to learn more.
